How to make it

Steps in our own plain words.

  1. Heat your meat: Place your flank steak in a pot using broth or water and salt.

  2. Cook on low heat for about 2 hours, until soft and easy to shred.

  3. Shred the meat: when cooked, drain.

  4. Shred the meat using two forks.

  5. Prepare the vegetables: cook garlic, bell pepper and chopped onion in a little oil.

  6. Add cumin, oregano, paprika, and salt.

  7. Stir in the meat.

  8. Cook for some minutes until the flavors are well mixed.

  9. Make the dough: In a bowl.

  10. Mix your cornmeal with warm water and salt till a soft dough forms.

  11. Let it rest for 5 minutes.

  12. Form the arepas: Divide the dough in 6 portions.

  13. Shape in balls, and flatten into thick discs.

  14. Heat: Cook the arepas on a griddle or pan on medium heat for 2–3 min on each side until golden.

  15. Then bake them for some minutes if you prefer them crispier.

  16. Fill: Slice your arepas open on one side, fill using the hot shredded beef.

  17. Top with grated cheese.

On the side: Green salad

A side we added to round out the meal. It is not part of the original recipe.

How to make it (10 min)
  1. Rinse the salad greens. Slice the cucumber.
  2. Put it all in a bowl and toss with the dressing just before eating.
