  • 10 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ⅓ cup + 2 tbsp lard
  • 3 ½ cups milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 ½ cups swiss cheese
Spices & seasonings (1): salt
  • 1 ¾ tsp salt

How to make it

Steps in our own plain words.

  1. Sift the salt, baking powder and flour into a large mixing bowl.

  2. Mix the lard and milk in a pot.

  3. Heat until the milk is hot.

  4. Pour the hot milk in the flour mixture.

  5. Stir until a dough forms.

  6. Turn out onto a floured surface.

  7. Knead until smooth and elastic.

  8. Cover, and let it rest for 15 minutes.

  9. Turn the oven on to 375°F.

  10. Roll your dough out on floured surface 1 4-inch thick.

  11. Cut into 4-inch rounds.

  12. Brush the outer edges of every circle using beaten egg, and fill with a little mound of cheese.

  13. Fold every circle in half to form half-moon.

  14. Press your edges using your fingers or a fork to seal.

  15. Place the empanadas on a parchment paper-lined sheet pan.

  16. Brush the tops with remaining egg.

  17. Bake in heat the oven until golden-brown, about 20 minutes.

  18. Alternatively, your empanadas may be deep fried.

  19. Do it in 375 degrees F ( degrees C) oil.

  20. If deep frying, don't brush your outsides of the empanadas with egg.

  21. Drain on paper towels.

On the side: Green salad

A side we added to round out the meal. It is not part of the original recipe.

How to make it (10 min)
  1. Rinse the salad greens. Slice the cucumber.
  2. Put it all in a bowl and toss with the dressing just before eating.
