- 1.8 lb cooking apples
- ¼ cup water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 ¾ oz butter
- 3 ½ oz breadcrumbs
- 1 ¾ oz sugar
- ¾ cup heavy cream Shopping tip: Heavy cream or heavy whipping cream (UK: double cream).
Spices & seasonings (1): vanilla powder
- 1 tsp vanilla powder
How to make it
Steps in our own plain words.
-
Peel.
-
Cut the apples into cubes.
-
Discard the cores.
-
Move apple cubes to a pot with water, vanilla and lemon juice.
-
Bring apples to a boil, cover.
-
Turn the heat down to medium-low.
-
Add the sugar as you like after the apples release their juices.
-
Your amount of sugar depends on your tartness of your apples and your preferred level of sweetness.
-
Remember that the breadcrumb mix and whipped cream are too sweet, so it's okay if your apple sauce is still a bit tart.
-
Cook the apples for around 15 min until you have a coarse apple sauce.
-
If you prefer, heat the apples longer for a finer consistency.
-
Refrigerate the applesauce.
- Breadcrumbs mixture
-
Melt butter in a pan.
-
The butter must not brown.
-
Add breadcrumbs and sugar.
-
Stir to mix.
-
Slowly toast the mix as you stir with a spatula.
-
Don't heat the mix for too long – it only takes short time to make.
-
Wait until the breadcrumbs are lightly golden.
-
Remove from your pan plus cool on a sheet of baking paper.
- Assembling the apple trifle
-
Don't assemble the trifle until right before serving.
-
Otherwise, the rasp will become soggy.
-
Dish up the trifle in individual little glasses or a large glass bowl.
-
Lightly whip the double cream.
-
Layer your ingredients in your glasses or bowl, starting using breadcrumbs in bottom, followed by chilled apple sauce plus breadcrumbs again.
-
Make several layers of breadcrumbs plus apple sauce.
-
Top using a generous layer of whipped cream.
-
Serve right away.
