  • 1.3 lb cooking apples
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 2 ¼ tsp lemon juice
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 ⅓ oz butter
  • 2 ⅔ oz breadcrumbs
  • 1 ⅓ oz sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream Shopping tip: Heavy cream or heavy whipping cream (UK: double cream).
Spices & seasonings (1): vanilla powder
  • ¾ tsp vanilla powder

How to make it

Steps in our own plain words.

  1. Peel.

  2. Cut the apples into cubes.

  3. Discard the cores.

  4. Move apple cubes to a pot with water, vanilla and lemon juice.

  5. Bring apples to a boil, cover.

  6. Turn the heat down to medium-low.

  7. Add the sugar as you like after the apples release their juices.

  8. Your amount of sugar depends on your tartness of your apples and your preferred level of sweetness.

  9. Remember that the breadcrumb mix and whipped cream are too sweet, so it's okay if your apple sauce is still a bit tart.

  10. Cook the apples for around 15 min until you have a coarse apple sauce.

  11. If you prefer, heat the apples longer for a finer consistency.

  12. Refrigerate the applesauce.

  13. Breadcrumbs mixture
  14. Melt butter in a pan.

  15. The butter must not brown.

  16. Add breadcrumbs and sugar.

  17. Stir to mix.

  18. Slowly toast the mix as you stir with a spatula.

  19. Don't heat the mix for too long – it only takes short time to make.

  20. Wait until the breadcrumbs are lightly golden.

  21. Remove from your pan plus cool on a sheet of baking paper.

  22. Assembling the apple trifle
  23. Don't assemble the trifle until right before serving.

  24. Otherwise, the rasp will become soggy.

  25. Dish up the trifle in individual little glasses or a large glass bowl.

  26. Lightly whip the double cream.

  27. Layer your ingredients in your glasses or bowl, starting using breadcrumbs in bottom, followed by chilled apple sauce plus breadcrumbs again.

  28. Make several layers of breadcrumbs plus apple sauce.

  29. Top using a generous layer of whipped cream.

  30. Serve right away.
